LOGOS

On a personal level this is the process of individuation. But what shall we make of our collective efforts at differentiation? What are the consequences of our collective struggle? Carl Jung says:

“The paternal principle, the Logos,… eternally struggles to extricate itself from the primal warmth and primal darkness of the maternal womb; in a word, from unconsciousness.” (ibid)

Jung associates the paternal principle with Logos, and Logos with ‘divine curiosity.’ This divine curiosity seeks the evolution of consciousness, bringing forth the potential and possibility of human awareness. Jung says,

“Divine curiosity yearns to be born and does not shrink from conflict, suffering, or sin.” (ibid)

I am not trying to turn this into a pretentious artist's guide to simplified Jungian ideology.  What is happening is discovery of meaning in response to experienced phenomena.  (Okay maybe a little pretentious...) In all honesty I have intentions when these images are drawn but deeper understanding occurs in reflection.  My desire for a healthy anima demanded a strong sense of self.  During the time of my separation and divorce I crawled into a cave(as I am want to do) and addressed the basic necessities to maintain or reconstruct my sanity.

I put down some things and some people that weren't moving me forward looked at how much stock I put in others evaluations of me.  I accidently realized I got FREE.  I found out what FREE meant and how much responsibility it is.  Still working on that.  So once again I end in meditation and work towards another realization.

INDIVIDUATION

Individuation is a process of transformation whereby the personal and collective unconscious are brought into consciousness (e.g., by means of dreams, active imagination, or free association) to be assimilated into the whole personality. It is a completely natural process necessary for the integration of the psyche. Individuation has a holistic healing effect on the person, both mentally and physically

      I found Jung through storytelling and mythology.  My psychology leanings are apparent as well.  But his work was about getting healthy.  Getting over it.  After reading Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker he became even more important to my journey.  Symbols become bookmarks from larger more important ideas.  A way to represent them without making there mysteries too concrete or literal.  That is why I make sequential art.  To get healthy and maintain the mystery. 

   These pages for Hod came almost straight from the sketchbook.  Copied then inked so they are a more organic and fluid than the Who am I? pages.

Hod is the eighth of the ten sefirot, and the fifth of the emotive attributes within Creation.

 

Hod is associated in the soul with the power to continually advance, with the determination and perseverance born of deep inner commitment, toward the realization of one's life goals. The acknowledgment of a supreme purpose in life, and the total submission of self which it inspires, serve to endow the source of one's inspiration with an aura of splendor and majesty. Hence the word hod connotes both "acknowledgment" (hoda'ah) and "splendor," in the sense of an aura-like "reverberation" (hed) of light.

 

 

 

        This part is about recovery.  What 2011-2012 was all about. The act of waking up by day.

      I tried to complete this story to separate and lay to rest what is Past.  To take advantage of NOW.  I embraced and exhausted the Physical, until all that was not Divine would fall away.

      Striding through a world of panels; jumping in and out of boxes, on the carnal Altar I discovered the power within.  When there is nothing else to fill you appetites you find the vast potential of NO-thing.  Past drunken Bacchanalia and misty smoke outs there occurred an awakening.  There is joy in the Party and pleasure in the afterParty but the awakening is transformative and redemptive.

      Down here on the ground there is nowhere to go but up.  The fair forms that offer distraction and release fall away leading to a higher Adoration.  But first the right Companion must be found.  It takes stumbles and hard lessons to realize: to learn from being wrong you have to accept Responsibility for the Wrong...

      Out of the Abyss.  This page creating it, reflecting on it,  and the time it represents was an exercise in ego destruction.   Every acceptance of change in life is about destroying who you were to accept who you are as circumstances and intention demands.  Rough collage is represented by the badly photographed and copied paintings down the center tier of the page.  Large paintings (4'x2') I made while in the relationship relating to the object of my love, the maturation of passion from lust to love, and the acceptance of death/change.

    Thinking a lot about layers.  Layers of space, layers of perception, and layers of meaning.  I have done a lot of editing of my original script.  Paring down to necessary text for available space and design.
    Lizard, Lyonmane, and Tapestry are brothers who care deeply for each other.  For these long lived comrades the expanse of time will test their ties and the Greenheart of Behemoth has sown its poison seed.

Every comic story needs a villain.  The evil that birthed Behemoth threatens the Realm.  I have realized in the years since I first created this image that the tentacles have become a motif in my work initially unintentionally and now purposefully.  Wild primordial tangles streams of potential energy creative...and destructive.

    The different shaded word boxes are indicative of different narrators.  Please bare with me.  O.M.P. is an exercise and evolution for me.  A discovery of process and a defining of technique.  Still thinking a lot about movement and how black & white work to move the eye.  Storytelling.

         I think I need to letter smaller.  I hate how much of the image I lost.  Or keep paring down my wordy script.  The inspiration for part of this story was young men growing up without fathers.  Instead of Madonna and child we have Widow and child.  I was a little miffed when I saw how much Female Trinities are being played up in the recent issues of Thor.  But thats myth.  What can you do.

  Every film has opening credits.  The Pantheon of this story.  The young fantastic beings  around which this story rotates.  Diana, Lord Lizard, Dzr, Lady Orb and Lord Lyonmane.

So the most important tool in any artists arsenal is the sketchbook. A year ago I dedicated myself to study the human female form. here are the fruits of that labor.

The Cornerstone of artmaking: Seeing and Sketching

Often students deep in the role of tortured artist will not turn in assignments. When asked what the problem was they say they have a terrible case of artist block and can't come up with good ideas or effective renderings. Of course thats bullshit. Not the inability to come up with ideas but, being unable to make effective renderings. Artmaking as a process is conceptual and technical. Concept deals with your intentions, the strength of your ideas you wish to communicate and I have found the more life experiences you have had the richer your conceptual landscape. You got more shit to talk about. The Technical aspect is the thing we can always do something about. If you can't translate wht is in your mind then excersize your muscles. And drawing is a muscle. Drawing or rendering from life is a skill you can improve.



I look at my mind as a compter with all this potential knowedge space. The more things you know the more things you have experienced the more things you can access to tell stories ( interesting or boring), negotiate problems, an yes draw pictures. So whenever a student says the can't think of nuthin' to draw I say draw from life, draw what i infont of you. if you can understand and master the language of the visual world you can create a language where your conceptual world meets the natural world or communal world. I took the last three years focusig on the female figure and styles in additiond to my other visual interests.



Once you findthe common visual lagauge you can play with it and evolve it. Playing with colorfields...

or complementary color relationships.

So draw something in front of you to improve your technique and turn natural ability to a powerful skill. Cause you gotta learn to mke correct sounds before you make sense. You got to understand what you see before you began making symbol marks.
